Two Tourists Drown in Phuket – Officials Warn of Strong Currents and Stress Lifeguard Supervision

Two more foreign tourists have drowned off Phuket beaches this week, adding to the growing toll of tragic incidents on the island. The accidents happend on Wednesday, one at Nai Yang Beach and another at Nai Harn Beach. Both are very popular with visitors, but officials warn they are also dangerous due to strong rip currents and sudden waves.

Authorities report that nearly 40 people already lost their lives to drowning in Phuket waters this year, many of them tourists who ignored red flags or swim outside of safe zones. Lifeguards and police again call for swimmers to be more careful, and to follow safety instructions posted on the beaches.

Phuket is world famous for it’s beautiful coastline, but experts stress that safety must come first, especially during the rainy season when the sea is rougher. Officials are considering stronger campaigns and new safety rules. Tourists are advise not to swim alone, avoid the water in stormy weather, and most important — only swim on beaches where Thai lifeguards are on duty, such as Patong, Kata, Karon and Kamala. These are the places with highest safety control.
