Flying out of Phuket this year? Your departure just got faster. On 13 June 2026, Phuket International Airport switched on automated passport channels for international departures, cutting the time you spend in the immigration queue before your flight home.

Here is what changed, who can use the new gates, and what you need to have ready.

What changed at Phuket Airport

The airport rolled out an Automatic Border Channel (ABC) system in the International Departure Immigration Area. Instead of waiting for a manual passport check, eligible travelers scan their passport and clear immigration at a self-service gate.

The goal is simple: shorter queues, smoother processing, and service that matches the automated lanes already used at major hubs like Bangkok Suvarnabhumi. With tourist numbers climbing, the new channels are meant to take the pressure off the busiest departure hours.

Who can use the automated channels

The ABC gates are open to two groups:

  • Thai nationals — can use all available ABC channels.
  • Foreign travelers — can use them if they hold an electronic passport (e-Passport).

To pass through, your passport must have at least 6 months (180 days) of validity left and be in good condition, without a cover or sleeve. A few rules apply at the gate:

  • You must be at least 120 cm tall.
  • Carry-on baggage taller than 120 cm is not allowed through the channel.
  • Pregnant passengers should use the regular manned counters, not the automated gates.

How to use the gates

Before you step up to the reader, take off your face mask, glasses, and hat so the camera can match your face to your passport. Place just one passport on the reader at a time, with nothing on top of it.

Tip: if anything looks unclear, follow the airport signage or ask staff at the channel — the system is new and there are officers on hand to help.

One thing to note on arrivals

The automated channels are for departures for now. Part of the International Arrivals Immigration Area was under renovation from 13 June to 9 July 2026 to prepare for the same upgrade, so arriving passengers may still see some temporary layout changes as the work wraps up.

What it means for your trip

For most tourists, this is good news: less time at passport control on your way out, and one less thing to stress about on a travel day. Just make sure your passport is an e-Passport with enough validity, and give yourself the usual buffer at the airport.
