The White Temple has long been a symbol of northern Thailand, but a similar architectural gem can now be found in Phuket. Wat Kanan is a true hidden treasure for travelers who want to discover something unique without tourist crowds. This place is still relatively unknown, making it easy to experience an atmosphere of peace and natural beauty.
What is Wat Kanan and why it is called the White Temple
In Thai, the name sounds like “Wat Khanen.” It is the only temple of this kind on the island. Travelers often compare it to Wat Rong Khun in Chiang Rai, but the Phuket White Temple has a completely different atmosphere.
The main building is located right in the middle of a pond: snow-white walls reflect on the water’s surface, surrounded by lush tropical greenery. Birdsong and a gentle breeze in the leaves create a true sense of Asian serenity.

Construction history
Construction began more than ten years ago and is still ongoing. The project receives no government funding — every element is financed entirely by donations from believers. Funds arrive gradually, which explains the slow pace.
Interesting facts:
- Archaeologists discovered ancient Sangkhalok ceramics and other historical artifacts here
- The temple houses a sculpture from the Ayutthaya Kingdom period, over 200 years old
- The official ceremony marking the completion of the ubosot is scheduled for December 28, 2025

Architecture and main features
Central pavilion – a domed structure standing above the water. Craftsmen carved intricate patterns into the columns and carefully detailed the façade.
Alley of the Nine Heroes – an area with sculptures where locals bring flowers and incense as offerings.
Maha Ut prayer shrines – special structures believed to protect from negative energy and ward off evil spirits.
The bright white architecture contrasts beautifully with the tropical greenery and blue sky.

What to see inside – museum and shrines
Lower level – exhibition: archaeological finds, ancient household items, and a sculpture over 200 years old.
Upper level – prayer hall: features a statue of Buddha Phra Somdej Ong Phatom at its center.
The pond is full of life: koi fish and turtles live here. Feeding them is believed to attract good fortune and cleanse karma.

One of the most popular activities here is renting traditional Thai costumes for a photoshoot. A rental point operates directly near the temple.

The white architecture creates a perfect backdrop for photos — a great way to capture memorable images and experience Thai culture.

Conclusion
Wat Kanan is one of Phuket’s lesser-known attractions. A snow-white temple standing on water and surrounded by jungle creates a sense of calm that is hard to find in the island’s popular tourist spots.
