Banana Beach is located on the northwest coast of Phuket, hidden from prying eyes by tropical trees and cliffs on both sides. Thanks to its location, this stretch of shoreline remained a secret for many years, known only to a few visitors. However, mass tourism is curious, and during the high season, this once-secret beach is now crowded with holidaymakers.
This paradise-like Banana Beach is nestled between Bang Tao and Nai Thon beaches. The shoreline has a semi-circular shape, which is why it got its name.
By Phuket's standards, it is quite a small beach, as Banana Beach stretches just about 200 meters in length. During low tide, the width is decent, offering enough space for all visitors who have made their way here. However, during high tide, only a narrow strip of sand remains, and when the sea is stormy, waves can reach the tree line along the beach.
A small pile of rocks naturally divides the shoreline into northern and southern parts. On both sides, there are also rocks, which make for fantastic photo opportunities. Those who are adventurous and agile can climb one of the boulders to capture breathtaking panoramic shots. The views are stunning!
Banana Beach in Phuket couldn't stay hidden from tourists for long, as visitors to the island always search for unique spots with great swimming conditions. This beach is one of those places. The sand is soft and clean, but the smoothest entry into the sea is only in the center of the beach. On the sides, rocks and coral formations appear near the shoreline, which can easily injure unprotected feet. The seabed is mostly sandy, with occasional rocks, but overall, they do not hinder swimming.
The water in this area is mesmerizing with its beautiful turquoise hue. Visitors will appreciate the gentle slope into the sea, which is smooth and without sudden depth drops. However, the beach cannot be called shallow. There are plenty of spots where you can enjoy a proper swim.
The sea is calm only during the high season. In winter, it is often completely still, but on some days, the Andaman Sea teases visitors with gentle waves. Many travelers come here specifically for these waves, as not everyone enjoys a completely calm sea. In summer, during the low season in Phuket, the waves take over the beach entirely.
Along the shoreline, a lush tropical forest stretches, filled with palm trees and casuarinas. These trees create a stunning landscape and provide a refreshing shade, especially in the morning. Those who don't mind walking a bit can find a comfortable spot under the trees near the beach. The shade is pleasant, but reaching the water requires a short stroll.
This secluded beach, far from urban areas, offers a true escape into nature. This region is one of the least developed on the island, with nothing but sea, sun, rocks, and jungle for about 1.5-2 km in any direction!
However, some infrastructure does exist. Since tourists have started coming here, small businesses have followed. There is a single café on the beach, but prices are quite high. There are no shops, and street vendors have not yet reached this remote location, so there is no competition. Many tourists forget to bring food or water, so sales remain steady despite the cost. That said, visitors generally praise the quality of the food.
You won’t find sun loungers on the beach, but there are mats under umbrellas available for rent, complete with small tables. They brought tables, but somehow forgot about sunbeds.
There is no traditional shower. You can only rinse your feet with fresh water from a large bucket.
There are no man-made attractions directly near this cozy beach, but Banana Beach itself is a local landmark.
The main attraction is the untouched natural beauty, allowing visitors to escape the city’s hustle and bustle. For more cultural and architectural sights, travelers will need to head towards Bang Tao.
There are few entertainment options. You can rent some basic swimming equipment, but the selection is limited. Snorkeling here is fantastic, with much more marine life than at other beaches on the island, thanks to the rocky formations and remnants of coral. However, it’s best to bring your own mask and fins.
On the right side of the beach, beyond the rocks, there is a stunning gorge. This is a perfect spot for incredible photoshoots, surrounded by lush green palms, giant boulders, and the turquoise sea.
There are no houses or hotels nearby. The closest hotels and guesthouses are about 2-7 minutes away by car. But for a determined traveler, this is not a problem.
Among the nearest options, Andaman White Beach Resort is highly praised. It is located in a cozy neighboring bay. Trisara and Anantara Layan Phuket Resort also receive good reviews. Renting a villa or an apartment is another option, which can be a bit cheaper, but guests will have to take care of their own service.
Finding the beach from the road is not always easy on the first try, as it is almost completely hidden behind dense trees. It is important not to miss the handmade sign located between Andaman White Beach Resort and Anantara Layan Phuket Resort. These hotels can serve as landmarks—if you pass from one to the other quickly, it means you missed the beach.
Another useful landmark can be parked cars along the roadside. These are often easier to spot than the sign, which sometimes falls down. You can park near other vehicles, and in the shade of the trees, there is a small path leading directly to the beach. The descent is simple and short, and in just 1-2 minutes, you will be greeted with a breathtaking view of the sea.
